The Renaissance of Lights and Myths

The Lú Festival of Light is Coming

If it's autumn, it's time for the Lú Festival of Light. Since 2022, this is the fourth time the event is taking place, and as time goes on, we look forward to it with increasing excitement, as the range of light displays and accompanying programs expands year after year.

But what exactly is Lú? The name refers to one of the most significant figures in Celtic-Irish mythology, the god Lugh (traditionally known in Irish as Lú), who was the god of light, the sun, crafts, and arts. The festival's name is also a symbolic tribute to County Louth (in Irish, Contae Lú), of which Drogheda is the historic seat. This name perfectly encapsulates the essence of the event: the encounter between ancient mythological roots and modern projection mapping technology, which illuminates the town's historic buildings year after year.

The Meeting of Lights and Built Heritage

The true magic of the festival lies in how modern technology and Drogheda's rich historical past literally intertwine. On autumn evenings, the town's iconic buildings—such as St. Peter's Church on West Street, the bell tower of The Old Abbey, and the historic St. Laurence Gate—transform into massive, breathtaking projection canvases. The projects are not only spectacular but also tell stories: legends of the god Lugh, Cú Chulainn, and other mythological heroes bring the past to life for locals and visitors alike.

The Magic of Autumn Evenings and the Community Experience

Why do we look forward to this time of year so much? The true power of the Lú Festival of Light lies in its atmosphere. When the autumn darkness descends, the installations illuminating the town completely transform public spaces and bring people together. Walking through the illuminated historic streets, locals and visitors share a collective experience as the buildings of the past come alive before our eyes. These few evenings lift the town out of the gray everyday routine and create a completely unique, warm atmosphere in the chilly October nights.

The Power of Collaboration

How wonderful it is that thanks to the collaboration of Love Drogheda BID, Louth County Council, and Fáilte Ireland, the Lú Festival of Light is taking place again this year! We can't wait to find out what stories and lights will enchant us this time.

And what does Escape Rooms Drogheda have to do with it? Wait just a little longer, and we'll be sharing more about that soon.
